After many years of going to school and saying no to drugs I graduated with a degree!  Little did I know it would lead me to being beaten into the ground at the hands of a soulless corporation.  After 3 years I quit to play poker professionally.  I've now been full-time over 7 years, yet revenge is still in the air.  It's crazy to look back and realize I started this blog as I was simply 'pumping myself up' to quit the real world and go full time.  Now I also do some writing for fun as a 'day job' (some freelance and paid, but an insignificant sum compared to 5/10 live) and airbnb my place when I don't feel like playing as much.

Struggling With Moving Down (11/19/2012)

My drop to 2/5 has started off with my nuts getting kicked in as usual.  I started up on Saturday +$925.  I followed up Sunday Monday down -$1270.  Monday I lost close to $900 in 4.5 hours.  I got stacked for $500 on a mega set up hand I'm never folding.  The other -$400 occured as I literally lost every hand I played.  I'm not playing bad, but not my A-game.

I've realized I'm somewhat out of touch with playing 2/5.  So basically I don't really fit in anywhere right now.  I have to get used to basically toning it down to the core and playing a 90%+ all value straight-forward game.  Beating 2/5 for a decent win-rate is extremely boring for me compared to 5/10 at times.  There's no stress financially, but there is a good amount of agnoizing boredom, anger, and depression that can easily build up with 2/5 (which I'm already feeling somewhat).  I guess it's either grind out emotionally crushed at 2/5, or have a heart attack playing 5/10.

I have to find a way to really dig down and grind out a few solid months on mid-stakes.  I'm going home for Thanksgiving so I'm planning to take at least 5 nights completely away from playing poker.

When I come back I also want to try to focus on a different casino a few nights a week that only has 2/5 running.  I think this will really help me personally.  It puts me on tilt seeing the 5/10 regulars strolling around.  And it's very hard for me not to check the 5/10 games.  I think it would be good to be in an environment with just no 5/10 and all.

Don't really feel like typing anymore.  I feel quite defeated and disgusted at the moment.

hi there. I been reading your blog and its very interesting one. Btw what other casino can you play that has 2/5NL running in AC? I played there before and Borgata is the only one. All the poker rooms on the boardwalk doesn't even get 2/5nl running. I think taj gets it only on weekends and harrahs maybe?

John,

If you're playing 2/5 in AC yes Borgata is pretty much it. I'm personally planning to mix it up at PA casinos, perhaps Parx and Chester.

Hey. Is there a reason for that? I mean, you mentioned you live in so its a 5 minute drive to borgata but if you go to parx and chester, its 1 hour drive at least if im not mistaken?

Btw, is 2/5nl at borgata really that soft like you said? I played 1/2NL there before but during the weekdays...and it was full of tight peddling nits.

If I play at the same place for over a year I'm probably going to start to hate it no matter where I am. Playing different locations mixes it up and keep things interesting.

The games in PA at 2/5 are generally softer and deeper (1k max BI). I haven't played any low-stakes in a long time but most live poker sessions should involve table selection. If the table is that bad just don't play. The good thing about 1/2 is you should have at least 10 tables to choose from.

Hey thanks.

By the way, would you ever move to vegas or florida instead? You mentioned that the games in florida are very soft and those players who play 5/10 are like living the dream.

And you mentioned when you play in vegas, you did good playing there.

Is there a reason you stay in AC as oppose to move to vegas or florida?

Also, isn't Borgata pretty much the place to play for high stakes? Ever weekend they have 10/25NL and a few 5/10Nl tables and if you play mixed games they have those 300/600 and 400/800? And in vegas... besides the bellagio, its like wynn, venetian and aria has max 1 table of 5/10nl only. Bellagio runs 10/20nl daily and many times wynn, venetian and aria dont even run 1 table of 5/10...

Also another question. Do you always post in a 2/5 game at borgata or do you generally wait? I'm aware that borgata collects time for every 1/2 hour. I mean, posting is good in that you get to play immediately but of course you most likely won't get a good hand and once someone raises, you are basically throwing a BB away each time.
