January Updates (1/18/2012)

I'm off to a very strong start in January. This is a bit of a suprise because my volume has been seriously slashed. Playing less and winning more is always fun, yet feels somewhat strange. The lowered volume has had nothing to do with how much I've won. It just worked out that way. Last week I only played 24 hours and won over $1700. My younger brother was visiting during the weekend so I just wasn't planning to play over 25 hours either way.
I want to really aim to play at least 35 hours during each of the next two weeks. This would result in at least 140 hours played for January which isn't terrible. My win-rate seems to take a hit when I put in over 160 hours.
Borgata's winter poker open is now in town which always makes for increased action on the cash tables during every day of the week. I've decided to not even enter one tournament this time around. No lottery tickets for me this time....
I'd normally at least play the first event, but screw it. I'm doing so well on the cash tables right now that I don't want to screw anything up. This could be my best month ever, now is not the time to lose focus on the real grind because I want to try to bink a tournament.

I agree with your decision to eschew tournament poker due to it's lottery like determination of the winner. You are running well, stick with what works. Also, you practive cash games all the time, but you rarely practice at tournament play. Thus, it stands to reason that you will likely be more successful at cash games. Regarding volume, it may be the case that less volume translates into more success for you. What if the desire to get more volume causes you to play longer than you can muster your A game? What if it causes you to want to play at a time when you know you are not on your A game when you otherwise might wait to play until you had your A game on?
As a pro, you should always be evaluating (using your data) your own patterns of success (and also the unsuccessful patterns). Keep an open mind. Your primary goal is to make the most money possible at poker, not necessarily get dealt the most hands. Good luck!
Lucypher,
Thanks for the comment some good points here. I just have no desire to really play tournaments right now so I don’t play them. I think the easiest way for me to build my roll for 5/10 is to keep grinding cash.
I’ve been logging less volume then I ever have and winning more (during the past few weeks). Most of that was unplanned. But generally I feel like a bit of a slacker if I’m not logging at least 35 hours a week. But logging only 25 a week once a month isn’t a huge deal in the overall scheme of things. But hell if playing 25 hours per week equates to pure A game and never tilting it’s something I should seriously keep an eye on.
